How to Make the Perfect Coffee

Plunger, press, cafetière - whatever you call it, everyone knows it's one of the simplest ways to get your coffee fix in the mornings. However, there's more to making coffee than a blind scoop and plunge; we believe that creating the perfect brew is an art form.

The Essentials

A workman never blames his tools - and a coffee master is no different. Set yourself up for success by preparing the correct conditions by using the right cafetière, water, and coffee.

Your coffee should be fresh, with a medium coarse grind size (which all Smooth's coffee product are). Your water should be filtered and soft at a temperature of 92C, added to the coffee at a Coffee:Water ratio of 1:15.

The Method

Follow the instructions below for the perfect pressed-coffee, and experiment with your timings and ratios until you find what is best for you.

  1. Pour the freshly-ground coffee into the press.
  2. Add the water into the press to ensure that the grounds are fully saturated.
  3. Wait for 5 minutes.
  4. After 5 minutes, skim the crust on the surface of the brew to remove it.
  5. Leave it a further two minutes to settle.
  6. Plunge down delicately until the press meets the surface of the coffee.
  7. Pour into a cup, and enjoy.
